CARRIER

·      Introductory

On May 7, 2005 the U.S.S Nimitz aircraft carrier left Coronado California heading towards the Persian Gulf ready for Operation Iraqi Freedom. The next seven months 0ver 5,000 will be living on board the ship ready to serve their duty and mainly to serve their country during the time of war. During war an Aircraft carrier is like a floating military base ready at a moments notice to drop bombs and carry out any mission. The carrier has up to 70 fighter jets ready to be launched 24/7 ready to carry out there mission. The PBS documentary Carrier film over 1,600 hours during their 7 months on bored the ship. In 2008 they released Carrier as an 10 part series to describe in depth what the experience is like to be on bored the U.S.S Nimitz.  With in the series you get a first hand experience to see life on bored an aircraft carrier during deployment at sea. During there 7 months at sea they stop many different ports around the world both getting to experience other nations but mainly to spend time off the ship.

·      Geography

The mission of the United States Navy is to protect and defend the right of the United States and our allies to move freely on the oceans and to protect our country against her enemies. The world is mostly ocean, making most of the world there playground to play and sail in. During there 7 months at sea they make nine different stop around the world. May 7, 2005 departs form Coronado California

1.     May 7, 2005 departs from Coronado California
2.     May 18, 2005 arrives in Peal Harbor
3.     June 3, 2005 arrives in Hong Kong
4.     June 18, 2005 arrives in Guam
5.     June 30, 2005 arrives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
6.     August 9, 2005 arrives in Bahrain and the Persian Gulf
7.     October 7, 2005 arrives in Perth Australia
8.     October 30, 2005 arrives in Peal Harbor
9.     November 8, 2005 returns to Coronado California

When dock at a port the members of the crew are allowed to explore each city they are docked in. When they head in to any port they have a tradition when they make the crew where there uniforms and stand around the edge of the ship. When they make there first stop in Peal Harbor many members of the ship head on over to the peal harbor memorial. When they arrive in Hong Kong or any port they are warned that they are in a different country and you have to act accordingly to their laws and mainly your part of the U.S Navy and you have to act like a sailor and don’t drink like one. As many of them due take the warring serious in the other hand many go strait to the bar and drink and drink. Don’t forget most of the crewmembers are between the age of 19 and 24 (young kids) thinking that they are unstoppable. Two days later they are ready to head towards Guam. Within their time in Hong Kong few members of the crew got arrested mostly for being drunk and in one case one member raped another crewmember. When it comes to the navy they don’t let shit fly by, each person will have to suffer consequences. This includes months with out pay, not allowed to leave the ship wile at port and wile the remainder of there time on the ship they would have to do extra chores. With in the 7 months every time they leave port many crew members got in trouble with the law or got too drunk and each of them will be charged and suffer severe consequences for there action. This shows not everything is going to be perfect and how crime does happen on bored an aircraft carrier.

·      Demography

Lets play a little numbers game. The U.S.S Nimitz have over 5,000 crew member, The Food Services Department provides 18,000-20,000 meals a day, witch they can stock at least 70 days of refrigerated and dry storage goods.  Don’t forget all your garbage has to go somewhere they recycle and through out thousands of pounds a waist each day for 7 months. Next, just say you get sick The Nimitz also features a 53-bed hospital ward that includes a three bed ICU, and acts as the hospital ship for the entire Nimitz battle group. Six doctors work around the clock including a general surgeon, provide everything from surgery to hydro-therapy. Don’t forget the crew need clean teeth so they also have five dentists. Think of the Nimitz like a small city , each city has a barber but the one barber shop on bored trims over 1,500 heads each week. The Post Office processes more than one million pounds of mail each year. There are three chaplains conduct daily religious services for the members of the crew.
During the 7 months at sea the Nimitz never stops and what makes this from happening in the crew that is the heart and soul of the ship. Every one of the 5,000 plus members each has a vital role in making the ship work days on end. From the Capitan to the seamen.
·      Economics

Lets start off each carrier cost up to 4 billion dollars. Each ships carries up to 70 fighter jets, witch cost up to 200 million. Fighter jets are just heavy metal paperweights would out fuel. Even though the carrier is run on nuclear power the fighter jets require jet fuel and a lot of it. Don’t forget about the crew members they need to eat 3 meals a day. The amount of food they go though during a 7 months of deployment is unbelievable. If you’re in the navy just wish you’re not part of the food service. Try making 3 meals a day for thousands of people.

·      Politics

When on the Nimitz it feels like its own little country with poor and rich people. What makes you rich or poor all depends on your rank. Rank is everything when it comes to the navy and the higher rank you have the more power you have. Some examples, if you’re seamen and you are waiting to see the dentist for a tooth pain but along comes a petty officer he would get treatment due to his higher rank. Another example is within the ship they have two different mess halls one for the Officers and one for the rest of the crew. Lets take a guess witch one has leather chairs and better food, the Officers.
Wile on the Nimitz you a must obey the rules of the ship. When it comes to the Navy rules, it is everything and it gives structure to the crew. Within the 5,000-crew members many of them get in to trouble by not following the rules. An example is when the Master chief is walking around and sees you slack off or are not during what you should be doing you will get in trouble. A more serious example is one crewmember during the night shift took off their jacket and through it in to the sea making it look like she went over bored. For this crewmember they were charge and was given months with out pay. When on the Nimitz if you do a crime you would be charged with crime.

·      Culture

More them 80% of the crewmembers are between the age of 18 to 24. When living with 5,000 young adults your going to run in to trouble and lots of drama. Lets give you some back ground on their living situation. Each member only gets the space the size of closet to live in for months at a time. Also like NYC the ship never sleeps so this means there is fighter jets getting launched around the clock 24/7. So lack of sleep and personal space for over 5,000 young adults now we can talk about what goes on. If there is one world that describes the Nimitz is one big High School. Every element of a high school happens with in the aircraft carrier. First lets talk about one of there golden rule, NO DATING. When there is thousands of crew members, dating is going to happen but if caught you will get in trouble. When word gets out that your are dating someone it will travel fast and within day the whole ship will know your dating.
Another element of high school within the Nimitz is how clicks form and how it is very segregated among different races. If you work on the deck launching aircrafts or if you are a pilot or if your seamen 100% of your time you will be around the people you work with. If you don’t work with them your not friends with them. This is how the ship works. Also if you’re a minority most likely you will find your kind and become friends. In one example a white seamen worked along with a black seamen and you could just image what happened. The white seamen was charge of being a races and was on thin ice of getting kicked out of the navy due to other charges of races acts.
Life on bored the ships is rough for many of the crewmembers but it is 10 times hard for women on bored the ship. As many would say to be in the Navy is only meant for men. Well we are in the 21st century and on bored the U.S.S Nimitz there are a number of hard workingwomen. Even though they are good workers they are living among many men witch could be harsh for them at some points. To help them they have counseling and group meeting to help them deal with the problem they have. In one situation an office raped wile docked in Hong Kong one member. I could just image what she was feeling having everyone on the ship known what happened to her. Another example is on bored the ship there is only a few women pilots. When it some to men pilots there is a lot of testosterone floating around witch could be hard for women pilots. In the end if you’re a man or women having thousands of roomettes you’re going to run in to a few problems.

·      Conclusion
When I was done watching this 10-part, 10-hour documentary I learned a lot. I did not just learn about how an aircraft carrier works or how they launch a plane from the deck of the ship. What I really learned is what it is like to be part of the United States Navy and what is it like to spent 7 months on bored a aircraft carrier. When they enlisted in to the Navy they do so to defend their country. But when your one of 5,000 crew members your going to run in to many problem. Besides the drama it is just the physical work they do day to day for months. For sum this might be too much but what I learned is everyone of the 5,000 people on the ship all when at work is the heart of the ship. The ship has many planes and bombs but without the people who launch the planes or prepare the bombs the ships is just a ship. In the end is I respect people who Join the Navy now and I respect what they do to our country but I just want them to see this documentary to under stand what they are getting them self in to before they check the box where it says to work on a aircraft carrier.

Range of SS4 Missiles in Cuba

Geography

The time period after WWII was called the Cold War. The world was divided into two colors. Blue and Red. Blue was the color of democracy and red was the color of communist and everything the United States did not believe in.  The two major countries during the cold war were the Soviet Union (Russia) and the United States of America. According to a map these countries are worlds apart but during the cold war alliances were made making the U.S.S.R only 90 miles away from the U.S.A. it was all made possible by Cuba. Once a country where Americas vacation at now turn red and were considered a threat due to the pack it made with the Soviet Union. The point where the U2 Spy planes found SS4 missiles in Cuba it made it possible that a Russian nuclear missile can hit any major US city at any given time. This is when Geography was a major factor when it came to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
SS4 Missile
Demography

The Cold War was not just like any other war it was a schoolyard fight between two bullies. Those two bullies were the two super powers of the 20th century. The Soviet Union after WWII was afraid of the U.S.A on how strong they were with having Nuclear weapons on their side. At this point the Russian started to bulk up in strength and start to produce nuclear weapons. Lets back track for a second and talk about nuclear weapons. If one SS4 missile from Cuba is launch and is targeted at any major city in the U.S it has the destruction power to wipe out the entire city in seconds. This equals to millions of people killed by one SS4. At the same time we would launch a missile at Russia having the same damage if not more. As a leader of the country JFK or Khrushchev is the one to give the order to attack and if so he would be responsible of the death of millions of people. During the Missile crisis both leaders would rely on the other leader to not make the first move if so it would end in a nuclear war.

Economics
As the two biggest super powers of the world money meant nothing to them. Both countries during the Cold War both build up their defense system to be the biggest and the best. After making a dozen nuclear weapons thinking they were unstoppable they did not consider the consequences if the weapon is used in action. If one would destroy a city like New York City, our economy would be destroyed and life after would not be the same.

During the missile crisis both economies were at risk, if we entered in to a nuclear war. When JFK made his speech to the nation on October 22, the American people were change ever since. The next day super markets were sold out of food people was considering the possibility of a nuclear war. Bomb shelters were being created people took this not as a warning but a possible situation that could happen at any moment.
Political cartoon during the Cuban missile crisis

Politics

The Cold War defined my many people as a political war. The Korean War and the Vietnam War were fought during the Cold War. Both wars were fought not face to face but the United States fought them to stop the spread of communism and mainly to stop the Soviet Union of gaining power.
Within the 13 days of the Cuban Missile Crisis it was a mini war fought by three powerful political leaders. John F Kennedy of the United States, Nikita Khrushchev of the Soviet Union and Fidel Castro of Cuba. Within the 13 day it was a game of Texas hold ‘em between each leaders. When it came to the Soviet Union and the U.S.A cards they were all in from the start and ready to go to war at any moment. When JFK took office he was the youngest president elected. Many countries did not think he could keep up with the big boys like Russia and Cuba. When it came to the Cuban Missile Crisis JFK showed to the world that he was not a kid and had balls when it came to making the executive decision.
Actual picture taken from U-2  spy plane on October 14 1962

It all starts when JFK found out that there were SS4 missiles in Cuba. When he found that out he was thinking why would Khrushchev do that and what is his reason for it. Could it be he is ready to attack us? Is he preparing for the future? All of these options were running through his mind when he found out the news. When he meets with his chief of staff on this crisis the intense 13 days starts. As his chiefs of staff are pushing for a strike plain he refuses and waits. As in war waiting could be a dangerous decision due to they can be attacked.  They were in the 20th century and JFK used that to his advantage and after keeping the missile crisis a secret to the world until October 22 when he addresses the nation on the situation in Cuba and how he orders a blockade of Cuba. He does this not for the people of the nation but to show Khrushchev that he is not scared and he is ready to play his game. Also to show that they are not scared he orders his B-52 bombers to circle around Russia ready at any moment to drop bombs.
Nikita Khrushchev is the leader of the Soviet Union. During the Cold war his goal was to build up the USSR and to become the most powerful country. In the 60’s he made a deal with Fidel Castro allowing him to have Soviet troops and Cuba along with nuclear missile. He agrees and under American surveillance the Soviets were able to send over 40,000 troops and a number of SS4 missile.
Fidel Castro did not know what he was getting him self in to. With him agreeing to take sides with Soviet Union Cuba became a major game player with the missile crisis. When they found out that they had the weapons JFKs chiefs of staff wanted to take immediate action. McNamara was pushing JKF to order a strike. Kenndy ask LeMayon what we can do with Cuba he reply’s“ We will fry them”. Cuba was now the main focus and could be in danger if an attack happened.
When the Blockade was order, Khrushchev did not think that was true and he still had his ships and Submarines heading towards Cuba they were given nuclear torpedoes and the Submarines commanders were given full order to use it if needed. During the blockade Soviet ships had a number of opportunity but before they did the were order back to Russia.
The Ball was now in Khrushchev court. On October 23 Khrushchev after the close encounter in the pacific he sends a letting to Kennedy saying “there is serious threat to peace and security of peoples." In response to the letter on Oct 23 Kennedy sends a letter to Khrushchev laying the responsibility for the crisis on the Soviet Union. This in now a war between Kennedy and Khrushchev.  On Oct 26th Khrushchev sends another letter to Kennedy now telling him to removing his missiles from Turkey and if Kennedy would publicly announce never to invade Cuba.
Site of the Major Rudolf Andersonis plane that was shot down in Cuba

October 27 also know as Black Saturday it all starts out by JFK meeting with his chiefs of staff arguing over how do we respond to his letter. As most of them are pushing for an attack, JFK is the only one thinking of his offer and putting it to consideration. As they are arguing they get a report on U-2 accidentally strays into Soviet airspace wile collecting data on the atmosphere near Alaska. Wile in Soviet airspace he is nearly being intercepted by Soviet MIG - 21 fighters. After a close encounter the tension is tense and each side is feared on who will make the first shot. Soviet forces on Cuba were order to fear for an American attack. An American U-2 making a flight over Cuba during this tense day they were given an order to shot down the plane. Major Rudolf Andersonis was shot down over Cuba. Khrushchev was nervous due to he had nothing to do with what happen and he did not give the order to shoot it down. JFK was being push and push to strike now but he was Commander and chief he stood down and waited. After Cuba is ready to be attack and the U.S.A military is ready to attack JFK stands down. As the night of Oct 27 falls  Kennedy writes Khrushchev a letter stating that he will make a statement that the U.S. will not invade Cuba and they will remove there missiles from Turkey if Khrushchev removes the missiles from Cuba.
News headlines across the nation showing the crisis was over

On Sunday October 28 1962, Khrushchev announces over Radio Moscow that he has agreed to remove the missiles from Cuba.

American Experience: The Amish

http://video.pbs.org/video/220074563
Introduction
The Amish first came to America in the early 18th century, due to a vast number of reasons. The main reason was there religion was Anabaptists. At the time they lived in Europe, they were prosecuted and punished for their religious views. Due to the hardship they encountered they left Europe and migrated to The New World. They first settled in Pennsylvania area, this is where they practice their traditional lifestyle based on a agricultural lifestyle. In this documentary by PBS witch is filmed over the course of a year shows you the lifestyle of the Amish people in America. Through out the film it shows how a typical child would grow up in the Amish culture. First, starting off with school and then starting their journey to become baptize and to join the church. Besides the life of the children, it shows the adult side of the story and how they are forces to change their 300-year-old traditions in order to support their families.

One of many Amish towns in Lancaster.
Geography
The Amish society wouldn’t be what it is today, without the location where they settled upon. They first came to the Americas, in the 1730’s. Before they settled, the Amish was located all throughout Europe, mainly in Switzerland and Germany. While they were living in Europe they were going through harsh times. They were being prosecuted due to their radical religious beliefs. The Christian church sent out hit men to capture them and burn them. At this point they wanted religious freedom, so they looked out to The New World where they migrated in large numbers to start a new life. When they arrived, they landed in Philadelphia and from there they moved outward to Lancaster. When they began to start their agricultural lifestyle they lucked out. The area they settle on has some of the best soil in the country making the Amish prosperous. The film starts off in Lancaster and then it shows how the Amish communities spreads to La Grange Indiana, Wayne Ohio and St. Lawrence New York where they depend on living off the land and practice the same agricultural lifestyle.

Demography

When the Amish first arrived to the Americas they enter in to a world with religious freedom and plenty of land. This was the driving force of the Amish to grow their culture and community. In doing so by the 1990 the population was over 124,000, By 2009, it almost double, climbing to over 250,000. Even know the population as dramatically increased it also has a short-term effect because there is only so much land to live on. Since the growth of population, in the documentary they state that more then 75% of the people left the land since they settle down in Pennsylvania. In doing so they settled in different areas trying to start up new communities and to benefit off the land.

A typical day at work for the Amish people.
Economics
In the Amish culture, the greatest honor for god is to work the land that god gave to you. The Amish society manly revolves around farming and working off there land for god. When it comes to the Amish economics almost all the money is in the land they own. Within the land they grow wheat, corn, you name it they grow it. The Amish are smart business men by they don’t have to pay for labor workers since the family works the land and they don’t have to pay for big machines to transport the good because they cant use technology so they use horses and buggy. The Amish are so prosperous in that a typical Amish farm is worth up to a million dollars. In the documentary they show that all through out the year they are working the land. In the winter they work on the dairy farming. During the spring and summer they are out their everyday rain or shine working their ass off. The one thing that makes us different then the Amish is that they are not lazy, they are strong minded workers. All of this is what makes the Amish rich in not just economically but rich at heart.

The Amish people who change there lifestyle to support their families.
When driving thought Amish country all you see is the beautiful farm they own. Ones might not realize what it is really like owning a farm in today’s economy. 50 years ago nearly all-Amish people supported themselves by farming. Today farmland in Lancaster County, can cost $15,000 an acre. As the land is getting expensive it is going to be harder to support your family just off the land alone. In the documentary it shows that Amish man today are switching from farming to working factories in order to help support there family and community. Working in factories for Amish men is the biggest change they face sine they came to the Americas. The change is to dramatic from using the technology and working with people who are outside of the church. Even know it is look down upon it has to be done in order to support your family. Today, most Amish support themselves by working in Amish-owned small businesses or non-Amish shops and factories.

Shows how the Amish community always works together.
Politics
Amish are not like many Americans. First of all they don’t even call themselves Americans nor vote or hang up American flags out side there home.  The Amish live among communities. Not just like any other communities in that they don’t follow local politics or laws. Since the Amish have no central church government, each community is its own governing authority. Giving every local church an individual set of rules (Ordnung), which may vary from district to district. Each community administers its own guidelines. These rules are largely unwritten, yet they define in every Amish identity. The rules can vary from what is allow in to the community or what is prohibited.
The ban of automobiles.

Examples of Practices Prescribed by the Ordnung:
                color and style of clothing
                hat styles for men
                order of worship service
                kneeling for prayer in worship
                marriage within the church
                use of horses for fieldwork
                use of Pennsylvania German
                steel wheels on machinery
Examples of Practices Prohibited by the Ordnung:
                air transportation
                central heating in houses
                divorce
                electricity from public power lines
                entering military service
                filing a lawsuit
jewelry, including wedding rings and wrist watches
                joining worldly (public) organizations
                owning computers, televisions, radios
                owning and operating an automobile
                pipeline milking equipment
                using tractors for fieldwork
                wall-to-wall carpeting
Amish people in court over the ruling over schooling laws.
Since they don’t follow the local law though out history the government wanted them to change like the rest of the country. As a community they stuck to there faith and their 300-year-old traditions instead. An example from the film the state of Pennsylvania made a law that children have to stay in school for 12 years but the Amish parents worried that more education would make their children too individualistic, lose their values and want to move away. Thus the state was suing them and giving them sentence them to jail. They fought back making the argument that it is our religious freedom and saying working for the family is more important than attending school in the Amish culture. In 1972, after two decades of prosecution The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the rights of Amish parents allowing them only stay In school for 8 years.
Another example from the film, is in northern New York State, the Amish are currently resisting building codes that require the installation of smoke detectors. To Amish, relying on manmade technology is not putting your faith in God. They say if a fire comes, sweeps through the house and something terrible happens, the child that they will be in a better place with God. By not obeying by the law they are being targeted to change there tradition but in the end they wont.
Family is the core of the Amish culture.

Culture
The Amish culture starts from their religion that is Anabaptists, a radical form of Christianity. With in there religion there is there community that has up to 30 families all part of the community church.  In the film it shows every Sunday the community all gets together to go to church. In the Amish community there is no church building, instead each family takes turn hosting Sundays mass in their barns or in their homes. Each mass in spoken in German and is memorized all my memory there is no reading of a text allowed during service.
An Amish one room schoolhouse.
Besides religion a main part of their culture is how they raise the children of the community. It all starts off with going to school for 8 years. The school is not like any normal school. Each community has a one-room schoolhouse where there kids are taught. A normal day for a child in school starts off at 6am when the girls cooks breakfast for the family.  After the meal the family has daily bible reading before the kids go off to school. When in school they mainly learn how to read and write and they learn some basic math skills.
An Amish teen durring Rumspringa.
Once out of school at the age of 16 Amish teens enter a period called Rumspringa witch means to run around. During this time of there life they are allow the special rite of passage .For the first time in their lives they are allowed to leave their families and hang out with their friends on the weekend. Between parental and church authority, the teens get to dress like a teen. Each teen gets to explore their true identity within the tribe. Some teens leave for the wider world. This gives the teen the change to find a wife and mainly settle down and get married. At the end of there late teens each choose to be baptized. Once baptized they join the church and start there life as an adult Amish. Within the film they show the Amish teens at a town festival socializing with other people from the county. Also they interview some of the teens. In one interview with a teenage girl she was talking about how her and most of the girls want to settle down and start a family. With the teenage boys it is different in that they like the different lifestyle. 90% of Amish teens at the end of Rumspringa do end up joining the church.
Shows the family at work.
Once part of the church you main goal for god is to work the land given to you.  They say that Jesus was a servant for mankind so the more you become more like a servant the happier you would be in life. The Amish people live life as a community not as an individual. From this point on you will become part of a family and with land to tent and children to raise up to become strong Amish men and women.

Conclusion
From watching the PBS American Experience documentary on the Amish made me experience what life would be like if i was brought up in the Amish community. It put me in to the shoes of the amish kid waking up at 6am to eat breakfast and then bible reading. Also the film made me feel what it is like to be part of the Amish church. As a child in the community the greatest achievement is to get baptized and to join the church. This video on the Amish made me think? From analyzing there culture, politics, and economy the Amish lifestyle is nothing like any American life. There traditions are based on strong religious values and the unwritten law of Ordnung and their agriculture lifestyle. The American people look down on them since they are completely different then us in many ways but when you stop and think that are just like you and me. We both are raised from families with unwritten laws. Even know ours are not as radical and called Ordnung. We know our as social norms. When it come to work, the Amish works on the family land. As us Americans we have chores to do around the house. In the end we have a little bit of Amish in us but not as radical.
